Three Doctors, One Record for Your Pet

Whoever sees your animal, the full history is already in the room.

Dr. Paul Sova, DVM

Owner · Veterinarian · City Veterinarian of Paterson

Dr. Sova grew up in this practice, in the family's veterinary business from the age of five. He earned his DVM at Ross University in 1993 and completed his internship at the Animal Medical Center in New York City, then came home to the hospital his grandfather opened in 1942, the third generation of Sova veterinarians to practice here.

His work for animals reaches past the exam room. He has served as the city veterinarian of Paterson for more than 30 years, working on public health and animal welfare for the city. He is a certified humane law enforcement officer for the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office, has investigated animal cruelty and hoarding cases, and is a past president of the PBA chapter of Animal Cruelty Investigators.

Because he owns the hospital, the advice you get in his exam room answers to your pet, with no corporate parent behind it.

Some clients have brought their pets to the Sova doctors for more than 30 years.

Dr. Sahony Caba, DVM

Associate Veterinarian

Dr. Caba is the doctor who catches the thing you didn't notice. The subtle weight change. The slight limp. The lab value that's technically normal but trending wrong. She doesn't rush, and she doesn't assume. If something is off with your pet, she will find it. She works from the same record as Dr. Sova, so nothing about your pet gets lost between doctors.

Dr. Caba is a first-generation doctor whose education runs through this county: Passaic County Community College, a biology degree in animal physiology and behavior at William Paterson University, then her DVM at St. George's University with clinical training at Louisiana State University. Along the way she earned NJVMA scholarships and the Zoetis Excellence Award, and she has served as a small animal clinical advisor overseas.

Her interest in animals started early, watching her grandfather and uncles care for the land and large animals in the Dominican Republic, where she was born. She worked as a veterinary assistant and technician before she was ever a doctor, and her externship training spans emergency and critical care, surgery, internal medicine, dermatology, and exotic medicine. If you have an exotic pet, ask for her: birds from parrots and cockatiels to macaws, plus ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs, hedgehogs, and hamsters.

Driven by faith, compassion, and her love for animals, she believes caring for animals and their families is a privilege, and she partners with owners so the standard of care continues at home.

Dr. Sarah Connolly, DVM

Associate Veterinarian

Dr. Connolly is the newest veterinarian at Blue Cross, and she is not new to the building. She worked here as a veterinary assistant for two years before veterinary school and kept shadowing the doctors all the way through it. She works from the same record as Dr. Sova and Dr. Caba, so nothing about your pet gets lost between doctors.

She grew up in Bergen County, where her love for animals started young, and it was shaped even more by the summers she spent with family in Ireland. Both of her parents are Irish, so Ireland became a large part of her childhood and the place where many of her fondest memories were made. Some of her earliest are helping care for a litter of newborn kittens on the farm, watching her uncle milk the cows in the parlor, and running around the yard with the family dogs for hours. She followed her aunt and grandmother into horseback riding at a young age, and it has stayed an important part of her life since.

That connection to animals and to Ireland is what brought her back there for her degree. She graduated from University College Dublin in June 2026. Before veterinary school she pursued hands-on experience across the profession, in equine medicine, small ruminant medicine, and small animal practice. The connection she felt with the team here, and the love she grew for small animal medicine and surgery, is what led her back to Blue Cross to work alongside Dr. Sova as an associate veterinarian.

Outside the hospital, she takes long walks with her dog, Hughie, rides, and cares for her horse, Gallo. She also stays active through fitness. She is excited to keep growing as a veterinarian while providing compassionate, personalized care to her patients and their families.
